SARAH SCRUGGS GREW UP IN BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA; Gregg Olson, outside Chicago. They met at the University of Vermont, and it was to Vermont that they returned for their wedding years later. The route to get there, though, was hardly a straight line. After dating briefly in their sophomore year, the two parted ways but remained friends, meeting up three years after graduation when both ended up in Burlington again. “It was a classic case of ‘timing is everything,’ says Sarah. “We immediately fell for each other all over again.”
On a hike up Stowe Pinnacle in the summer of 2006, Gregg took the relationship to the next level. While he had led her to believe that a proposal was not on the near-term horizon, when they reached the summit Gregg’s nervousness gave away his true intentions. When he proposed, says Sarah, “It is a good thing we were the only ones up there, because I don’t think I’ve ever screamed so loud in my life.”

Stowe had been a special spot for Gregg and Sarah as a frequent weekend escape from Burlington, and having the wedding there provided a great opportunity to show friends and family what they most loved about Vermont. The Trapp Family Lodge offered the perfect location for the ceremony and reception, with breathtaking views from the wedding meadow, including Stowe Pinnacle, the site of the proposal.
With the backdrop of the Green Mountains, “the combination of pink and green seemed a perfect color palette,” says Sarah. In honor of a bumblebee that wouldn’t leave them alone on the day Gregg proposed, the couple customized the tags for their welcome bags and favors with a bee stamp, and gave guests Vermont Honeylights beehive candles as keepsakes.
Highlights of the wedding day included perfect summer weather, the company of friends from all over the country, and Sarah’s best friend singing the Beatles’ “All You Need Is Love” during the ceremony. One of the couple’s favorite songs, “it was a total surprise to Gregg,” says Sarah. “The look on his face was priceless.”
A great band - and wedding professionals with a sense of humor - really came through, says Sarah. She advises other brides to “have as much fun as possible because it will be over before you know it,” and stresses the importance of managing the budget, cutting back on little things if necessary. “At the end of the day, no one is going to notice or remember that you went with the stainless steel flatware instead of the silver. And it may mean you’ll get to hang those lanterns after all!”
