Re: Advice
Probably the best places to start are with different bridal and shelter magazines. Look at pictures and think about the styles that you like, colors, texutures etc, but most importantly the things that are meaningful to you,as a couple and as an individual. After you've made an appointment with a florist in your area, you'll be able to go in with a sense of direction. Most florists will be willing to work with you to realize your vision, and if you find things spinning in a direction you are not happy with, say so! As for your budget, it's important to understand that flowers, design skills, time and overall costs involved are not inexpensive. Also, you should realize, that in spite of articles that tell you that flowers 'in season" are less expensive, well, that's going to be true for the wholesaler but not (overall) for you. But there are things you can do to bring costs down. Consider having the florist create only the personal flowers for you and your wedding party, and provide the reception flowers yourself. Blooming plants, such as elegant phalenopsis orchids, can be found in quantity at places like Home Depot, and chances are they'll have pretty pots and stands to dress them up. Ask the department manager about ordering a quantity in time for your date. Or, if you like an elegant and modern look on your reception tables, floating individual blooms in various sizes and shapes of clear glass containers can be quite lovely. Surround these with telights or pillar candles. Group various sizes of pillar candles and surround with flowers. You could even do this with silk blooms as long as you stay with the most natural looking; or just rose petals, mix your colors and buy the premade bunches at your local supermarket. You'll just need a cool place to store them until your event, and your refridgerator will be fine. Good luck and write back if I can help you.

Re: Advice
good luck! i would start contacting anyone and everyone now. i'm also getting married in september and a lot of florists that i spoke with a couple of months ago were beginning to book up - something that i didn't think happened to florists. i had a terrible time finding anyone that met my idea of reasonably priced and so, although i may live to regret this, i am going to do my own flowers. i spoke to a cut-your-own garden place who advised that i could cut flowers the day before the wedding and they don't need to be kept refrigerated. the woman who runs the garden does wedding flowers so will do my bouquets and boutinneres, and then i'm going to rope my mom, his mom, and my bridesmaids into helping arrange on the morning of the wedding - we're just going to do flowers in quart jars. it helps that we are having a smallish wedding in a rustic setting, we think casual flowers will look great - and cost about $200 for about 400 flowers, plus another $100 for the bouquets. some florists wanted more than that for just three centerpieces.

Re: Advice
I agree with Liz, this is a smart move. Not only will her flowers be reasonably priced, they will be fresh and in season and look amazing. I recommend working with a local grower if possible, there are many. If you do not know where to start look up 'vermont farmers markets' and go to the farmers markets near you and strike up a rapport with a local grower there (may even give you a discount for buying in volume!) or go to NOFA Vermont website to find a grower near you.

Re: Advice
I am also getting married in September (in Burlington) and I hired Fresh Floral Design Studio (based in Shoreham, VT). I am thrilled so far with the whole experience. She was happy to work with my budget -- saw it as a challenge. She took 2 hours with us (came to us) for our first meeting. I live 300 miles away, so she went to our ceremony and reception locations on her own for inspiration. The owner/designer's name is Dana. I'd give her a ring! www.fresh-studio.com. We met with 3 florists and she was the most creative and eager and fit our style the best. Good luck!
